This blog explores the unique challenges faced by high-achieving women in balancing multifaceted roles, delving into the intricacies of emotional well-being, stress management, and the vital need for self-care to prevent the erosion of one's emotional foundation.
Life's throwing a lot your way, isn't it?
Between work and kids or possibly even caring for your aging parents, it feels like you're on an emotional roller coaster, trying to keep it all together.
I get it because I’ve been there. The constant hustle for success and taking care of everyone else can leave you feeling drained, stressed, and on the brink of burnout. It's tough, especially when your well-being takes a backseat.
You may not be sleeping at night, eating right, or exercising. You are sacrificing your health for those around you.
You are emotionally drained and struggling to maintain a sense of equilibrium. This space is for you, to explore the challenges you're facing and find ways to navigate this roller coaster with more ease. We'll dive into the emotions, and the stress, and rediscover the importance of taking care of yourself.
You're not alone, and it's not just okay to prioritize your well-being, it is necessary. Let's navigate this journey together.
1. Acknowledge Your Emotions: Accept your emotions. Whether it's anger or sadness, understanding your feelings is a crucial first step.
I think of my emotions as guests visiting on a holiday. I embrace a mindset of hospitality towards my emotional guests. I remember that my guests will leave eventually. After my emotional guests leave, I reflect on their presence and how I feel after their departure.
2. Develop Your Emotional Toolbox: Picture a toolbox filled with go-to strategies that bring comfort. It could be music, a favorite book, or engaging in creative outlets. Equip yourself with these tools to manage emotional challenges. Let me give you an example. When I feel myself getting upset, I leave the space immediately. I go for a quick short walk outside. I pull out my bird app and try to identify the bird sound I am hearing. Nature restores me and brings me back into focus. If it’s at night, I have an app that helps me identify where the stars, planets, moon, and constellations are located. This helps me realize how incredible the universe is around me and puts things in perspective for me.
3. Establish Healthy Boundaries: Boundaries are your allies in this emotional journey. Learn to set limits, say no when necessary, and establish clear boundaries to prioritize your well-being. When I walk into the house after a long day, I know that I need a few minutes to myself. I have established a routine that allows me this time and my kids know that these 15 minutes are “me” time so I can be better for them later in the evening.
4. Cultivate a Support Network: This may be the most important tip of all. You cannot do this alone on an island. Every high achiever needs a support system. Connect with friends, family, or mentors who understand your journey. Share your feelings and lean on these connections during challenging times. Joining an online or neighborhood support group will provide validation, understanding, emotional release, and much-needed encouragement you need. In hindsight, I should have done more of this.
5. Practice Mindful Moments: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your routine. Whether it's meditation, deep breathing exercises, or a short walk, these moments can help you stay grounded and resilient. I incorporate mindfulness into everyday activities that are part of my daily routine. I’m big on sprinkling five 5-minute nature walks in my day. Remember all mindful means is paying attention to what you are feeling and doing in that very moment.
6. Utilize Journaling for Reflection: Journaling is a powerful tool for self-reflection. Documenting your thoughts and emotions can provide clarity and serve as a valuable outlet for processing complex feelings. Journaling doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be 3 things you are grateful for, or it can be something weighing heavily on your mind, or it can be a sleep diary. It’s also ok to skip a day or two or three. Find what works for you.
7. Prioritize Self-Care: Self-care is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Amidst your responsibilities, plug in self-care in your daily calendar, even if it’s just 5-10 minutes twice a day. This can be a quick short walk or drinking a cup of coffee or tea by yourself in the morning. The key is to be purposeful about it. Now, think of 3 activities that bring you joy and relaxation that will take a bit longer. Commit to doing one of those activities over the next week. Perhaps a painting class is in your future?
8. Seek Professional Support: If emotions become overwhelming, don't hesitate to seek guidance from a mental health professional. Their expertise can provide valuable insights and coping strategies tailored to your unique situation. They can help you better understand and cope with your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
9. Celebrate Your Achievements: Recognize and celebrate both big and small achievements. Acknowledging your accomplishments boosts confidence and reinforces your resilience in navigating the work-caregiving balancing act. Celebrating achievements releases dopamine in the brain, which is a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. It helps boost motivation and helps create a positive reinforcement loop. Every time I have a small win, I celebrate with a small reward. It can be something small like a Starbucks oat milk Latte. It’s something that makes my brain go, woo-hoo and more!
10. Embrace Your Uniqueness and Growth: Understand that perfection is not the goal. You have never made a mistake. Yup, you read that right. Rather they are lessons learned. It’s all about how you reframe your thoughts. If you embrace your true authentic self, you will realize that every misstep is an opportunity to gain new insights, and build resilience, and self-compassion.
In mastering emotional resilience, you're not just managing your feelings; you're empowering yourself to thrive amidst the complexities of your high-achieving life. Stay resilient, stay true, and continue excelling in your journey.
